Share a Coke
I've been wanting to write and post so much new content, but life and work have been busy. I did want to comment on what an awesome branding job Coke did with their new "Share a Coke" campaign. I have seen so much free advertising and publicity from the news to social media.
No matter what name was on the can/bottle, people were going to drink it. However, people are searching out/creating their own Coke bottle names, and if they find one I bet they'll post it to Facebook or tell a friend.
Well done!

American Airlines Brand
Another iconic logo lost to modern design--seems to rely heavily on the gradients, so I created a mock representation to see just how much...

New Chuck E Cheese Mascot
At least with the old mascot you could see and avoid his elephant-sized droppings. Now you are going to have to watch out for Chuck E Cheese's new pizza topping, or droppings...

FASTSIGNS Branding
FASTSIGNS new storefront graphics and branding. Installed this project today in 100 degree heat. I have to say I'm a little hot. Still need to remove and make a few edits to the graphics on the left side...

Luxury Apartment "Specials"
There are a couple of apartments in my area that consider themselves "Luxury Apartments" on their signage, but they always have people in character costumes out front promoting specials. I've seen Uncle Sam, a bunny, Santa Claus, and some marshmallow-type character. It seems to go against a luxury brand by having "specials" with cheap signs, frivolous characters, balloons, and the such. Here's a quick mock-up of the scene.

Betty White Brownies
Betty White is a Queen of Pop Culture. Everything she touches has appeal. So, I'm suggesting Betty Crocker modify their branding a bit. Keep the Betty, drop the Crocker, and replace it with White. Done! Add a little fun, and call it good.

Pepsi Next
Pepsi Next is launching this week with 60% less sugar and fewer calories than a standard Pepsi. Sucralose and aspartame will act as sweeteners.Based on its packaging, Pepsi Next appears as if it could be more successful than Pepsi's previous spin-offs, Pepsi One and Pepsi Max. They distinguished themselves as low-calorie alternatives to regular Pepsi by using black packaging to indicate this difference. By keeping Pepsi Next's packaging simple, clean, and using a lighter/cooler variant of the Pepsi blue it maintains the overall Pepsi brand while appearing crisp, refreshing, and light.
I guess it really comes down to if the stuff tastes good and similar enough to Pepsi...

The Sketchpad
The Sketchpad
12.01.11
As stated, The Sketchpad will be undergoing some changes as I publish my online collection of portfolio work. I want the look to be consistent across all media. Some changes may only be temporary. Header is a little large, but I'm stuck with the pixel space.
Changes usually take some time to adjust to, so please bear with me. Sometimes you know as soon as you see them you will always hate them. Just ask Gap.
COMMENTS WELCOME!

Wendy's Wendy
Wendy's Wendy Thomas
Come on Wendy's! I know sales are down, but to drag Wendy into this mess? Can't we just keep her as the iconic little redhead girl on the french fry box? Wendy's is looking for Wendy to be another likeable Dave Thomas-type company spokesman. The Wendy's logo looks like it will be needing an update to remain true to the character.
Clarification: A reader brought to my attention this statement could be taken offensively, and my wife said she could see where they were coming from.
At the time of this commercial, I had read an article describing Wendy's restaurants' struggling finances. Therefore, I was sarcastically asking Wendy's restaurant why they were dragging Wendy Thomas into their troubles after all of her years being behind the scenes. It is not an insult on her position, character or appearance.
"The Wendy's logo looks like it will be needing an update to remain true to the character" is referring to my earlier statement to keep her as the nostalgic "iconic little redhead girl." This is wordplay to keep the "myth of Wendy" and brand intact--if not, maybe they'll have to consider updating their whole image of Wendy's.
We all know Wendy's was trying to recapture some of that Dave Thomas magic. If Wendy Thomas was behind the commercial then great for her. I thought it was some marketing company using her character as a ploy.
Most people come to my site only to look for photos. Since I never really knew who Wendy was, I wanted to share the image with a brief tongue-in-cheek statement. This is a previous brief I wrote...Wendy's Logo
Apologies,
Will

Antonelli College Logo
For no apparent reason or trigger, I was thinking of my distaste for the Antonelli College logo for most of the day. I had a piece written up in my head about how there was too much going on in the logo and type. It never came across as professionally designed for a school that charges premium rates. It appeared a mess to me, from the curly "A" with a drop shadow to the multiple-shaded dots and triangles.
I was thinking of ways to modernize and minimalize the design... However, I must have been out of the loop because when I visited their site they had a completely new look. They now have a very sterile logo that identifies Antonelli's as being one in the same as all those trade colleges with multiple degrees popping up in bulk to make a quick profit. I assume this must have been their brand all along.
I don't like to be insulting towards other designer's and/or marketer's visions, but this one seems to be lacking a strong foundation. Am I wrong?
