SunnyPop / SunPop Select

 SunnyPop / SunPop Select

Gold Medal has introduced SunPop™ Select, and SunnyPop™ popcorn as healthier alternatives to snacking—Whole Grain, Gluten-Free, and Non-GMO. With SunnyPop™, now schools can offer a popcorn that meets the guidelines of the USDA Smart Snacks in School program.

I am excited to announce the unveiling of SunPop Select and SunnyPop. Our team had the opportunity to create the packaging, bags, posters, and even the laser-cut popcorn popper.

This is one of 30 projects our team has been working on for the last few months. Please visit gmpopcorn.com to see our line-up of current products. I will start publishing these projects and many more as they are distributed. Stillwind created the mock-ups.

Share a Coke

I've been wanting to write and post so much new content, but life and work have been busy. I did want to comment on what an awesome branding job Coke did with their new "Share a Coke" campaign. I have seen so much free advertising and publicity from the news to social media.

No matter what name was on the can/bottle, people were going to drink it. However, people are searching out/creating their own Coke bottle names, and if they find one I bet they'll post it to Facebook or tell a friend.

Well done!

Pepsi Next

Pepsi Next is launching this week with 60% less sugar and fewer calories than a standard Pepsi. Sucralose and aspartame will act as sweeteners.

Based on its packaging, Pepsi Next appears as if it could be more successful than Pepsi's previous spin-offs, Pepsi One and Pepsi Max. They distinguished themselves as low-calorie alternatives to regular Pepsi by using black packaging to indicate this difference. By keeping Pepsi Next's packaging simple, clean, and using a lighter/cooler variant of the Pepsi blue it maintains the overall Pepsi brand while appearing crisp, refreshing, and light.

I guess it really comes down to if the stuff tastes good and similar enough to Pepsi...

Who is Little Debbie?

Little Debbie

Little Debbie has me hooked. Every time I go to the grocery store, her seductive eyes draw me in to purchase her product. Okay, she's a little young for me, but her Zebra cakes are downright sexy. I'm blissfully gaining a pound a day. Here is what they don't show you in the Little Debbie logo...

Fat Free Red Hots and Lemonheads

Fat Free Redhots and Lemonheads (A Candy Diet)
William D. SIEMER II

When I was young, me and my friends would ride our bikes up to the local convenient store. On our way we would try to find coins on the ground or glass bottles in the bushes that we could trade in for money to buy candy. Pal Bubblegum and Swedish Fish were a penny each and small boxes of Lemonhead and Red Hots Candy were ten cents.

Those days are gone, but some of our favorite candies remain. I recently bought Lemonhead and Red Hots as part of that 3/$3 deal at Walgreens. Still like I remember them, but I have to say I get a good kick out of the label on the box. Marketing genius. Both boxes say "A FAT FREE FOOD."

It reminds me of the first episode of Mad Men when they have to find a way to market around the fact cigarettes are harmful to your health. The gurus at Ferrara Pan were probably thinking the sugar and carbs in candy give it a bad name, so let's say it's FAT FREE!

I may undertake a Subway Jarod here, and start a fitness and meal plan based around Ferrara Pan Candy. 6 grams of fat? Try ZERO! I'll report back in 30 days.

I'm starting a Lemonhead and Red Hots diet. wdsiemer ii

Mice & Birds Cat Food

Mice & Birds Cat Food

Thinking of starting a new line of cat food that is more reminiscent of the prey cats usually find around the neighborhood. With flavors such as Mice & Birds, Roadkill, and Rabbits & Squirrels in a bloody mixture, how could I fail? Whiskas is in no way associated with this idea, I am using their packaging as a representation of what this product could be.

A "new" kind of cat food. wdsiemer ii

Cheez Balls

Cheez Balls

This looks like an accident waiting to happen. I've been using this generic Cheez Balls' container for over 5 years to collect dull x-acto and utility blades. My question: What exactly were in these Cheez Balls to have to make the packaging so resilient?

Summer Package Designs

Summer designs aim to boost soda, beer and tissue sales
By Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY

These Kleenex boxes are designed to look like waffle ice-cream cones. Kleenex.
Folks who sip a Coke, munch a Chips Ahoy or sneeze into a Kleenex this summer can't avoid noticing summer-theme package designs.

It's about sales. Marketers know shoppers can be swayed to buy a product not just because of what's inside the box or bottle, but what's on the outside. That's why package design has become a $1 trillion industry. Even a fraction of a percentage of increased sales can separate a successful selling season from a lousy one. So consumer product giants are adding a splash of summer to packaging.
"People look at brands and see a sea of sameness," says JoAnn Hines, a package design consultant. "But a unique shape, design or color that says summer can take them out of the me-too category."

Retro is the New Modern

Article 4/28/11
Retro is the New Modern

Bought retro Trix from Target a few weeks ago, and have to say I love the packaging. No major shading, gradients, or 3-d designs. Just simple, straight-forward designing at its best. :) Today's Design We've Seen (a lot) series will sort of be geared towards the retro theme. Here's an article...

The Tuggie

I really don't want to be THAT kind of site, but with my mentioning of the Snuggie in "QR Codes Will Rule The World" I thought this wonderful packaging design warranted publishing.
