New Yahoo! Logo Coming...

Good idea/bad idea to tease the excitement of a new logo, but to not have any true identity for 30 days except displaying design concepts? I guess it's all about drawing interest to the upcoming changes, and will leave room for debate...

Yahoo announced on Wednesday that it's changing its logo... without showing off the actual logo itself.
In an initiative called "30 Days of Change," Yahoo will debut a different version of its famous purple logo across its various websites every day. At the end of the month, the company will settle on an official new look.

New Farmers Logo Vector

Sometimes I like to recreate logos from scratch to get a feel for the make-up and details of a logo. Farmers Insurance released this a short while ago. I enjoy discovering the little nuances such as the amount of degrees in the rotation of the rays.

This recreation should in no way be used in lieu of the actual logo (it ruins the purpose of branding).

Wendy's Hidden Message

This isn't my point, just a re-post from somewhere else...

"Look at the clever way the word Mom is hidden in Wendy's collar," noted Stocklogos. "The trick is most apparent in the single color variation of the logo used on packaging." Like this all-red example on a plastic cup.

The Costs of Logos

The next time you're worried that the few hundred dollars you're paying a good designer for an effective logo is too much, keep some of these in mind... Logo Rebranding Costs

Wendy's New Logo

Figured this one was coming... The Sketchpad Archive

How long before Wendy is rebranded to be hip like Colonel Sanders? I guess being animated made her pretty cool. I like my red-headed sister the old-fashioned way she is. 01/08/11

New Microsoft Logo

I actually like Microsoft's new logos, and think they work. The Microsoft logo is clean, simple, modern-metro, friendly, soft, and lends itself to many applications. It plays on its old "window" logo, but eliminates the flag-like warp and gradients. They create brand recognition by four colored rectangles, which speaks volumes. It reminds me of a quick thought I had about the Mickey Mouse logo being nothing but 3 black circles.

The new Windows 8 platform, like the logo, is cleaner, simplified, and uses squares in much of its interface design. Its design is competing with Apple's as much as the companies are fighting for each other's audience. The new Microsoft store showcases some of the implementations of its new elements that I believe will age a lot better than any of their previous logo designs.

Mickey Mouse Brand

I've been watching a lot of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse lately. I actually enjoy it because I analyze the three-dimensional graphics. Then, I started to think of the Disney and Mickey Mouse brand, and thought how cool is it that you can recognize the Mickey brand by THREE CIRCLES...

New Chuck E Cheese Mascot

At least with the old mascot you could see and avoid his elephant-sized droppings. Now you are going to have to watch out for Chuck E Cheese's new pizza topping, or droppings...

Red Cross Brand Identity

Back in February, the American Red Cross caved into a design trend, and decided to reinvent their iconic logo with gradients, a 3-d orb, and drop shadows. Soon, EVERY company and logo will follow suite.

See my previous pieces: 3-D Orb Logo & Forgettable Tag Lines

Design by Henri Dunant, 1863.

The emblem of a red cross with arms of equal length on a white background is the visible sign of protection under the 1949 Geneva Conventions (inverse of Swiss Flag). As such, it is the emblem of the armed forces’ medical services.
International Red Cross uses the Red Crescent name and trademark in some Arab World countries.

Wendy's Wendy

Wendy's Wendy Thomas

Come on Wendy's! I know sales are down, but to drag Wendy into this mess? Can't we just keep her as the iconic little redhead girl on the french fry box? Wendy's is looking for Wendy to be another likeable Dave Thomas-type company spokesman. The Wendy's logo looks like it will be needing an update to remain true to the character.
Wendy's Wendy Thomas. the sketchpad
Clarification: A reader brought to my attention this statement could be taken offensively, and my wife said she could see where they were coming from.

At the time of this commercial, I had read an article describing Wendy's restaurants' struggling finances. Therefore, I was sarcastically asking Wendy's restaurant why they were dragging Wendy Thomas into their troubles after all of her years being behind the scenes. It is not an insult on her position, character or appearance.

"The Wendy's logo looks like it will be needing an update to remain true to the character" is referring to my earlier statement to keep her as the nostalgic "iconic little redhead girl." This is wordplay to keep the "myth of Wendy" and brand intact--if not, maybe they'll have to consider updating their whole image of Wendy's.

We all know Wendy's was trying to recapture some of that Dave Thomas magic. If Wendy Thomas was behind the commercial then great for her. I thought it was some marketing company using her character as a ploy.

Most people come to my site only to look for photos. Since I never really knew who Wendy was, I wanted to share the image with a brief tongue-in-cheek statement. This is a previous brief I wrote...Wendy's Logo

Buffalo Wings & Rings

New Buffalo Wings & Rings Brand
Production doesn't always get the same glorious treatment as design, but it is equally important. Although these Buffalo Wings & Rings' files came to us as a finalized design from Interbrand, we realized their vision through materials, color matching and production quality.

There are a lot of ways a good design can be ruined, and sloppy production would be one of them. Keep that in mind every time you present a final project at school, hold a gallery showing, or present to a client. Show you care for your work!

Summer Package Designs

Summer designs aim to boost soda, beer and tissue sales
By Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY

These Kleenex boxes are designed to look like waffle ice-cream cones. Kleenex.
Folks who sip a Coke, munch a Chips Ahoy or sneeze into a Kleenex this summer can't avoid noticing summer-theme package designs.

It's about sales. Marketers know shoppers can be swayed to buy a product not just because of what's inside the box or bottle, but what's on the outside. That's why package design has become a $1 trillion industry. Even a fraction of a percentage of increased sales can separate a successful selling season from a lousy one. So consumer product giants are adding a splash of summer to packaging.
"People look at brands and see a sea of sameness," says JoAnn Hines, a package design consultant. "But a unique shape, design or color that says summer can take them out of the me-too category."
